The General Epistle of James Taken from the Rheims Translation (1582) 5 Jan 2001 This epistle is written to all of the Israelites scattered among the dispersion. This is considered to be the oldest book in the New Testament, and was written by James, the relative of Jesus Christ. This particular book dealt heavily on consumption of wealth, classification by financial stature, financial gain by abusive practices, and sinful lifestyles. Outside of the account of the Gospels, and the book of the Acts, there is little written record of James existence. He was martyred by Herod, and was one of the foundational members of the church of Jerusalem. I find this book interesting today, because of the lifestyles and business practices once again commonplace today. Just one hundred years ago, an employer who refused his employees payment, or abused his help lost his honor in society. As big money and aristocracy of the wealthy set in, this practice became commonplace to the point where employees organized, and politicians had to protect the workers. I do not support the unions however, like the practices which gave them birth, they now have become corrupted, and abusive of their role, as well as politically debased. Here is the earliest condemnation of a consumption-based society. To start this letter, James begins with trials and tribulations, and financial distress as a trial from YHVH, reminding the reader that these things strengthen, and gives examples of his theory. He also delves into distress in prayer, the feeling that you are getting no where, and that it feels that YHVH is sending trouble instead of help, which James clarifies. And then shows that faith alone without action is useless. There is more to this letter of coarse, but the thrust of this letter is a requirement to change your practices, your ideals, and your attitude. As you read this, keep in mind of how it fits into society today. You may say that you are not a part of this, and I hope that you are not, but when you consider your assets, do you keep money in a bank that operates on usury, or loaning money for profit, using legal manipulation to gain even more? Do you have stock in companies that loan, legally wrangle, or simply use litigation to keep from a distance the problems they cause the "little guy"? And is your mutual fund, or 401k financially supporting credit card companies, who make the bulk of their profits on the backs of those who have run into trouble, borrowed money, and are now paying dearly for their misjudgment? Or possibly unable to pay, causing them financial nightmares, poverty, and legal subjugation? YHVH told us to come out of Babylon, and this was their main practice. Conquest by tribute and bankruptcy. Possibly you are one of the people under this financial anvil, this letter was also written for your behalf, because it reminds you that they will all be accountable to the Judge of all things for their actions. When you get in, and they are dealt the way they dealt with you, all things will have been judged according to their actions. This letter as I wrote before reminds me of today’s events, and so I find the first written Epistle, to have the most modern meaning for the end times. [1] James the servant of God, and of our Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. So much for the rumor of the "lost ten tribes", it would seem apparent that James knew exactly who they were, he wrote this letter to all of them. Notice that on the missionary journeys, especially those recorded in Acts, the Apostles went all throughout the Mediterranean and parts of Europe. Other recordings by historians, like Josephus record that the Israelites and the Indo-Europeans were the same peoples. [2] My brethren, count it all joy, when you shall fall into divers temptations; [3] Knowing that the trying of your faith worketh patience. [4] And patience hath a perfect work; that you may be perfect and entire, failing in nothing. [5] But if any of you want wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men abundantly, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James explains that temptation hardens the resolve, and for the intellect and wisdom, we should request it from our Father YHVH. [6] But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea, which is moved and carried about by the wind. [7] Therefore let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. [8] A double minded man is inconstant in all his ways. This shows first that no one should expect something from YHVH, that these blessings are given as they are needed, and as they are deserved. A double-minded man is someone who knows what is right, but continues what is contrary. These people would be passed over from the blessings. [9] But let the brother of low condition glory in his exaltation: [10] And the rich, in his being low; because as the flower of the grass shall he pass away. [11] For the sun rose with a burning heat, and parched the grass, and the flower thereof fell off, and the beauty of the shape thereof perished: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.[12] Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he hath been proved, he shall receive a crown of life, which God hath promised to them that love him. James explains that material blessings are not a measure by which YHVH rewards, further, he explains that these possessions come and go, and are no longer yours when you die. The correct measure of knowing your assets is that you have thrived among temptation. Just as a reminder, Christ Himself was tempted out in the desert, and likewise, the pharasees tried to tempt Christ to give in to them. He obviously passed these tests, but the result of this was crucifixion, which by worldly standards is not a very desirable reward. By the standards of YHVH, this "reward" was the final step in the battle against the revolt lead by Satan, and his people. [13] Let no man, when he is tempted, say that he is tempted by God. For God is not a tempter of evils, and he tempteth no man. [14] But every man is tempted by his own concupiscence, being drawn away and allured. [15] Then when concupiscence hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin. But sin, when it is completed, begetteth death.
[16] Do not err, therefore, my dearest brethren. [17] Every best gift, and every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no change, nor shadow of alteration. [18] For of his own will hath he begotten us by the word of truth, that we might be some beginning of his creatures.
[19] You know, my dearest brethren. And let every man be swift to hear, but slow to speak, and slow to anger. [20] For the anger of man worketh not the justice of God. [21] Wherefore casting away all uncleanness, and abundance of naughtiness, with meekness receive the ingrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
[22] But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. [23] For if a man be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he shall be compared to a man beholding his own countenance in a glass. [24] For he beheld himself, and went his way, and presently forgot what manner of man he was.
[25] But he that hath looked into the perfect law of liberty, and hath continued therein, not becoming a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work; this man shall be blessed in his deed. This explains that a Christian who observes YHVH’s laws and lives by them, is not a useless listener, or follower of the show, but a participator, and a doer. This is the man who YHVH will choose to bless. [26] And if any man think himself to be religious, not bridling his tongue, but deceiving his own heart, this man's religion is vain. [27] Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation: and to keep one's self unspotted from this world. As the Apostle James explaines later, what you say defines you. A religious man who uses vulgar language is not perceived by others to be very stable. Have you ever heard a preacher start swearing and cursing during his sermon? He would not do that because of the consequences, and during your life, you are under the same scrutiny. When the Bible calls for the extermination of Sodomite homosexuals, how can a Christian be a Christian, as well as a homosexual? When the Bible is against usury, and you call people to badger them for nonpayment, for the credit card company that employs you, how then, can out of this same mouth you abuse men for money, and sing praises to YHVH? You would not slander your employer, because he would terminate your employment. A drunken statement about another woman can reach your wife causing un-repairable damage to your family. A boastful statement about a sinful act, which you have committed, now becomes attached to you. The tongue powers the body like a small rudder steers a large ship. James says to make your self useful to others, not be the big mouth, or the big shot. The idea conveyed here is that we are to keep as true to the requirements as possible, which is YHVH’s laws through Moses. This way we become examples to others, and hold a position un-contestable when it comes to correction. A few examples are as follows. John Gotti would have never been convicted had he never talked about what he did. Also, when Congress attempted to impeach Clinton, their past histories were made public, used to condemn the judges, against a man who sinned greatly, and mocked his jury. This is a summary of the point that James is making. We are here for a short time, and we should try to get through this as if we are in a trial, and we decided to avoid self-incrimination by not testifying against ourselves. Chapter 2
James here attacks the idea of class distinction, that the poor are less and that the rich are more, saying these rich people are the same ones who sue you and ruin your reputation for gain. Why would you praise them, and judge someone else who never could do this to you? He says that by doing so you play the judge and dishonor the better of the men. [9] But if you have respect to persons, you commit sin, being reproved by the law as transgressors. The point here, as defined in the Greek, is uneven respect is transgression of the law. Judging people by their possessions and not by that which they are truly worth. Class distinction, among Christians is a sin. Job was a very wealthy man, and people respected him, YHVH allowed Satan to take everything away from him, including his health, just to show Satan how confident He was in Job’s faith. At what point was Job a more valuable person? When he was wealthy, and applauded YHVH for his wealth, or when he was destitute, unable to even work after everything was taken from him, while he still praised YHVH for his life? Would this same man be a lesser person because he survived a grueling test from YHVH, leaving him impoverished? We know the answer to that, and James wants to make a similar point. [10] And whosoever shall keep the whole law, but offend in one point, is become guilty of all. [11] For he that said, Thou shalt not commit adultery, said also, Thou shalt not kill. Now if thou do not commit adultery, but shalt kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. [12] So speak ye, and so do, as being to be judged by the law of liberty. [13] For judgment without mercy to him that hath not done mercy. And mercy exalteth itself above judgment. James says that this is transgression of the law, just as is adultery or murder. Also, I believe this is referring to the wealthy man and his legal pursuits, as mentioned before, as a man lives without mercy, his judgement from YHVH will also be without mercy. Remember these things as you choose your acquaintances, and as you deal among people. In Genesis 18, YHVH Himself and two of his angels were upon this earth as men. I would not want to have to answer for dealing falsely for gain against one of these men. Who is to say that each man you advantage from is held against you? It is still transgression of the law, and it has such little profit, considering the consequences. If you are forgiving and straight with the people you interact with, that way YHVH will be to you at Judgement. If you condescend and manipulate people, only to add a little more wealth to yourself, this hardened action will be returned to you, as YHVH will consider that you had no mercy or fairness, and so you do not deserve any from Him. Remember that as Jesus Christ converted tax collectors, he told them before they could follow Him, they had to pay back every man they manipulated, this did not mean walk around behind Jesus, it meant to be a Christian. [14] What shall it profit, my brethren, if a man say he hath faith, but hath not works? Shall faith be able to save him? [15] And if a brother or sister be naked, and want daily food: [16] And one of you say to them: Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled; yet give them not those things that are necessary for the body, what shall it profit? [17] So faith also, if it have not works, is dead in itself. [18] But some man will say: Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without works; and I will shew thee, by works, my faith. This is another example of being a doer and maker, and not just a cheerleader. James says that to be a Christian, you don’t just talk about it, or believe in it, but you live it. Action speaks louder than words. Remember the parable about the wedding party, when the father threw a wedding for his son, and the rich were to tied up in their possessions to attend, so he disowned his friends, and invited the poor. This was supposed to be some incredible party this man was throwing, and his friends were to comfortable to care. Action, not words, to speak about how you are against poverty, but will not help the impoverished, what do you prove? To say I am a Christian, but do nothing to show it, how can you prove it? James also says that he could prove his faith, by showing his works, what have you done lately? Live the word, it has a purpose, and even an atheist can memorize scripture, and earn men’s respect by well working. Under this circumstance, how much more is required for us? Action, not words. [19] Thou believest that there is one God. Thou dost well: the devils also believe and tremble. Here James explains that the devils also understand just as well as we do. They know YHVH and His word, and it terrifies them. They have faith also, what good does that do them? Their actions show something else. [20] But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? [21] Was not Abraham our father justified by works, offering up Isaac his son upon the altar? [22] Seest thou, that faith did co-operate with his works; and by works faith was made perfect? [23] And the scripture was fulfilled, saying: Abraham believed God, and it was reputed to him to justice, and he was called the friend of God. [24] Do you see that by works a man is justified; and not by faith only? Another example of this point is that Abraham would kill his own son for YHVH, believing that YHVH would keep His promise to make him a father of many nations, even though Abraham was very old, and he had only one acceptable son. Notice that this same measure of a test of faith was returned through YHVH’s own Son, in the Crucifixion. What would be the result if Abraham refused out-right, and made no show of faith. To show faith is action, not words. [25] And in like manner also Rahab the harlot, was not she justified by works, receiving the messengers, and sending them out another way? [26] For even as the body without the spirit is dead; so also faith without works is dead. Rahab was a prostitute who realized who Israel was, and harbored spies for them, and allowed them to escape. When the city was destroyed, her household was the only one spared. The people of her city also knew who Israel was, and understood that they had previous military conquests which terrified them. They also knew that this was attributed to YHVH the God is Israel, but chose to fight instead. Rahab also understood the same things, but her actions proved that she was on the correct side. Her faith didn’t save her family, it was the action that she performed that worked for her advantage.
Chapter 3
Masters translates also as teachers, the word master shows a position of authority. One who teaches is responsible for his words. A false teacher, who teaches false doctrines, then becomes accountable to YHVH for any people that he misleads.
[2] For in many things we all offend. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man. He is able also with a bridle to lead about the whole body. [3] For if we put bits into the mouths of horses, that they may obey us, and we turn about their whole body. [4] Behold also ships, whereas they are great, and are driven by strong winds, yet are they turned about with a small helm, whithersoever the force of the governor willeth. [5] Even so the tongue is indeed a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold how small a fire kindleth a great wood. [6] And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is placed among our members, which defileth the whole body, and inflameth the wheel of our nativity, being set on fire by hell. [7] For every nature of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of the rest, is tamed, and hath been tamed, by the nature of man: [8] But the tongue no man can tame, an unquiet evil, full of deadly poison. [9] By it we bless God and the Father: and by it we curse men, who are made after the likeness of God. [10] Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. [11] Doth a fountain send forth, out of the same hole, sweet and bitter water? [12] Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear grapes; or the vine, figs? So neither can the salt water yield sweet. [13] Who is a wise man, and endued with knowledge among you? Let him shew, by a good conversation, his work in the meekness of wisdom. Once again, the emphasis is placed on controlling your language, James says that what you say defines you, and what you speak, represents you. [14] But if you have bitter zeal, and there be contentions in your hearts; glory not, and be not liars against the truth. James says that if you preach a faith, which you have not consented to it’s authority, or preach so that you can prove yourself against others, you preach as a liar. [15] For this is not wisdom, descending from above: but earthly, sensual, devilish. [16] For where envying and contention is, there is inconstancy, and every evil work. [17] But the wisdom, that is from above, first indeed is chaste, then peaceable, modest, easy to be persuaded, consenting to the good, full of mercy and good fruits, without judging, without dissimulation. [18] And the fruit of justice is sown in peace, to them that make peace. First, clean up your own act, and then you can preach. To be inconstant in your actions, and to preach, is falsehood, and a deception to others. Control your mannerisms, so that you are also an example, and then proceed.
Chapter 4
This passage states that the disruptions among the church is caused by peoples own lustful desires. These are the things which cause contention. Also, the reason why you ask from YHVH, and He does not give the desired results to you, is because you ask for the wrong reasons, and your intentions with these gifts are for degenerate purposes. If a man asks YHVH for money, while his intentions are for drunkenness and debautery, why should he expect YHVH to give him one penny? The point made here is that YHVH will give you what you need, and continue to do so, as long as you do not abuse these gifts, or misuse them. [4] Adulterers, know you not that the friendship of this world is the enemy of God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of this world, becometh an enemy of God. An adulterer, by Biblical terms is a race-mixer, as well as the other sexually disorientated, but in particular here, as race-mixing. Worldly women, or women of "strange flesh" are forbidden. "Thou shalt not commit adultery" means adulteration of the racial bloodlines and sexual disorientation. I can’t imagine why people haven’t figured this one out, since the following of the Ten Commandments says "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors wife", YHVH is not redundant, it has a different meaning. James here calls race-mixers enemies of YHVH. [5] Or do you think that the scripture saith in vain: To envy doth the spirit covet which dwelleth in you? [6] But he giveth greater grace. Wherefore he saith: God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. [7] Be subject therefore to God, but resist the devil, and he will fly from you. This passage explains that YHVH gives to the humble, but resists the proud. Resisting sin, also leads to the devil giving up on you. [8] Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners: and purify your hearts, ye double minded. [9] Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into sorrow. [10] Be humbled in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you. James speaks of a mental cleansing, a true repentance, and a definite change of mind. He is speaking again of a requirement to resist sin, and to subject to the law. [11] Detract not one another, my brethren. He that detracteth his brother, or he that judgeth his brother, detracteth the law, and judgeth the law. But if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. [12] There is one lawgiver, and judge, that is able to destroy and to deliver. This is stating that it is not our place to accuse each other and point the finger at each ones faults, this is YHVH’s right, and not ours. [13] But who art thou that judgest thy neighbour? Behold, now you that say: To day or tomorrow we will go into such a city, and there we will spend a year, and will traffic, and make our gain. [14] Whereas you know not what shall be on the morrow. [15] For what is your life? It is a vapour which appeareth for a little while, and afterwards shall vanish away. For that you should say: If the Lord will, and if we shall live, we will do this or that. [16] But now you rejoice in your arrogancies. All such rejoicing is wicked. [17] To him therefore who knoweth to do good, and doth it not, to him it is sin. This states that our time is short, and we can not even predict what will happen tomorrow, so who has time to judge each other? Anyone who knows what is right, and does wrong, is committing transgression of the law, which is sin.
Chapter 5
James compares earthly gain to a testimony against us at judgement. [4] Behold the hire of the labourers, who have reaped down your fields, which by fraud has been kept back by you, crieth: and the cry of them hath entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. Also, that YHVH Himself will hear the charges against you for the payment frauded from the people who worked for you. [5] You have feasted upon earth: and in riotousness you have nourished your hearts, in the day of slaughter. [6] You have condemned and put to death the Just One, and he resisted you not. This would seem to be a misrepresentation, the correct translation simply states the righteous, inocent, or equitable, not necessarily the Just One, although that could be an alternative meaning. This would imply that for gain and to live a depraved lifestyle, these people would condemn a just man. This may be a throw of condemnation toward the Crucifixion of Christ.
[7] Be patient therefore, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth: patiently bearing till he receive the early and latter rain. This is referring to how the farmer waits until the harvest to reap his yield, being patient for the right time to do his sowing and reaping. James compares this to the coming of Christ the second time. [8] Be you therefore also patient, and strengthen your hearts: for the coming of the Lord is at hand. [9] Grudge not, brethren, one against another, that you may not be judged. Behold the judge standeth before the door. [10] Take, my brethren, for an example of suffering evil, of labour and patience, the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord. [11] Behold, we account them blessed who have endured. You have heard of the patience of Job, and you have seen the end of the Lord, that the Lord is merciful and compassionate. The judge standeth before the door is stating that YHVH decides who is included in His Kingdom. References to the prophets and Job, for the suffering they endured during their stay on earth. [12] But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, nor by the earth, nor by any other oath. But let your speech be, yea, yea: no, no: that you fall not under judgment. This states that we should refuse to affirm our word, and let it stand for itself, swearing by that which belongs to YHVH is not our right. [13] Is any of you sad? Let him pray. Is he cheerful in mind? Let him sing. [14] Is any man sick among you? Let him bring in the priests of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. [15] And the prayer of faith shall save the sick man: and the Lord shall raise him up: and if he be in sins, they shall be forgiven him. [16] Confess therefore your sins one to another: and pray one for another, that you may be saved. For the continual prayer of a just man availeth much. [17] Elias (Elijah) was a man passible like unto us: and with prayer he prayed that it might not rain upon the earth, and it rained not for three years and six months. [18] And he prayed again: and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit. James states that the power of prayer of a righteous man can heal the sick, remove the debt for sin, and has effect. He goes on to remind that Elijah prayed to YHVH to hold the rain for three and a half years, and YHVH did so, and also to return the rain, and YHVH did so. [19] My brethren, if any of you err from the truth, and one convert him: [20] He must know that he who causeth a sinner to be converted from the error of his way, shall save his soul from death, and shall cover a multitude of sins. Credit is given to those who can correct lost and apostate people. By doing so, you relieve him from certain death, and you receive brownie points. In my introduction, I basically stated my opinion of this letters relevance today, all of the problems mentioned in this letter are commonplace in today’s society. The severity of James strong condemnation of these things could not be stated more clearly. Damnation, outright mentioned as the penalty, and ruthless condemnation of catering to the wealthy. Of all the books contained in the New Testament, this one is the hardest and strictest dealing with manners of business and social cruelty. When you reflect on this message from the Bible, see what it says about society today, legal abuses, consumption, degeneracy, justice for the rich, disregard for the poor, all of these things are rampant, and there is no end in sight. It is my belief, that our whole society is in transgression of Biblical law, the Politicians who overlook these things are traitors, and the whole system is corrupt from the top down. These people will receive their just rewards alright, every judge who condemned you will answer first to YHVH, and every tax dollar taken from you to be used for abortion, false charity, or to pay an illegal debt will be accounted for in the presence of YHVH. Each lender will justify his charges before YHVH, each employer his payroll before YHVH, and each accuser will explain each charge before YHVH. All police who falsely accused, or stretched the law a little to charge you will be in terror of what he must defend, and each man will explain how he used the gifts from YHVH to benefit those without, or his lack thereof. Judgement day will be a terrible thing for many, there is no closet to hide the skeletons in. What have you done that YHVH should consider you for entrance? We can not earn salvation, but as James explained in modern terms, Action, not words! Fortunately for us, those who carry on until the end will not face judgement, but the road ahead will continue to grow harder, but the reward is worth the struggle. The Do Not Judge Others Misconception There is another point that I feel is necessary to add, as I hear all of this rhetoric saying, "thou shalt not judge" against the most open and outrageous commiters of abominations, please keep in mind that this Epistles message was to imply impartiality between believers, and not saying do not condemn evil, or the evil doers. YHVH gave us the Law, and sin is the transgression of this Law. Upon the witness of two men, a man can be put to death for certain transgression of this Law, so we have throughout the scriptures a guide to judge evil, and those who commit transgression thereof. Judging transgression is a different matter than social judgement, and behind every evil is an evil doer. There is no murder without a murderer, there is no adultery without adulterers, and there is no burglary without a burglar. By the means provided we can judge, and in some instances execute for punishment. This is a different matter, and those who live a lifestyle of transgression of YHVH’s Law have no excuse to say, "judge not lest ye be judged". What is open and obvious, or for that matter provable, is suitable for judgement. The transgressors simply do not want to hear the truth about themselves, and do not want others to hear that they are transgressors against Divine Law. This somehow, with the assistance of corrupt clergy, has become the big "excuse" for these people. By this means, this is deliberate misuse and misrepresentation of the Word of YHVH. Likewise, those who make the excuses for the transgressors, become guilty themselves in partaking of the transgression. YHVH is the ultimate judge, and He gave us guidelines for judgement of others while upon this earth. They are intended to be our guide until the completion of this age, and they are intended for enforcement. Judge not, and expose not, and you may be judged for ignoring your responsibility, enforce not and these transgressors will set the example of flourishing evil to your descendants.
